Why Healing Feels Harder Before It Gets Better

If you’ve ever thought, “Why does this feel harder now that I’m actually trying to heal?” — you’re not alone.
One of the most confusing parts of healing is that it can feel more uncomfortable, emotional, and overwhelming before it feels lighter or easier. Many people expect healing to bring immediate relief. Like waving a magic wand. Instead, it often brings awareness, sensations, and feelings we once had to suppress in order to survive.
That doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong. It often means healing is truly happening. And that is our goal.
Healing is not linear. Some days we are feeling like we are moving up and other days feel like we took ten steps back.
It’s a whole-body process that involves your nervous system, emotions, memories, beliefs, and a sense of safety. When all of those parts begin to shift, discomfort can come to the surface. And I constantly remember it’s not as a sign of failure, but as a sign of change and giving space for the trauma to be felt and move through.
Below are some of the most common reasons I have found that healing can feel harder before it gets better. You tell me if this resonates:
Healing Is Uncomfortable
Healing asks us to feel what we once had to avoid. Yes, I said it. Healing is not the time to avoid how we feel.
For many people, survival in those traumatic moments required numbing, dissociation, distraction, or staying busy. When healing begins, those protective patterns may soften. Emotions that were pushed down can start to surface and we need to allow them to surface without negativity or suppression.
This can feel like:
Feeling more emotional than usual
Crying without a clear “reason”
Feeling tender, raw, or exposed dare I say vulnerable too....?
This doesn’t mean you’re regressing nor failing. It often means your body finally feels safe enough to feel. and there is beauty in that. You gave yourself space for your body to no longer hold it in.
I know in my healing journey when I would get emotional at first, I felt I was a mess... Just a mush balled up pile of crud constantly having my emotions on my sleeve. I know a lot of people wouldn't want to be around me because I was so raw and emotional. But I had to realize I was finally in the space to express all those feelings that had once been numbed. I finally got the space to express all the moments in the past where I was told to "get over it", "suck it up", "this isn't anything to cry over, move on". And some people gave me that space and others didn't. But I knew later that had nothing to do with me. (and that's for another post)
Healing Is New and Unfamiliar
Your nervous system learns through repetition. If stress, chaos, or hyper-vigilance were once your normal, calm can feel strange—even unsettling.
Peace can feel unfamiliar. Slowness can feel uncomfortable. Safety can feel uncertain.
Not because those things are wrong—but because they’re new.
When healing begins, your body is learning a new baseline. That adjustment period can feel disorienting before it feels regulating.
My advice give yourself grace. Even though you are learning new and healthier ways to move through your healing, if you never did it before it can send you into shock. This is one thing I had to overcome along with the clients I have helped in their healing journey. It's a process just like the fear or nerves you would get learning to write, read, and ride a bike. it's not going to be perfect the first try, but giving yourself grace, patience and acceptance for this new change will over time bring peace and you will be in a space doing healthy coping skills as muscle memory, just like when you mastered riding a bike.
Old Coping Tools Stop Working
The coping strategies that once helped you survive may begin to feel heavy, ineffective, or misaligned.
You might notice:
Numbing behaviors don’t bring relief anymore (for me that was drinking, what used to keep my feelings suppressed no longer helped and was becoming a problem than solution)
Overworking feels exhausting instead of productive (I would be on the go all day, but nothing got accomplished, but went everywhere for people to think I'm ok)
People-pleasing feels draining rather than protective (I realized being there for everyone but not there for me became unfair and realized I was missing out on me and my desires)
This can feel scary, like losing a safety net. Like how can I get through this when none of this is bringing me joy. I felt I was falling until I accepted that these healthy ways were my safety net.
In reality, it’s often a sign that you’re outgrowing survival mode. Your system is ready for healthier, more supportive ways of coping, even if you’re still learning what those are.
Awareness Increases Before Relief Does
Healing often brings clarity before comfort. Like a smack in the face sometimes. lol WHAM!
As awareness grows, you may begin noticing:
Triggers you didn’t recognize before
Patterns in relationships or behaviors
Where your boundaries need strengthening
What truly brings you peace
Traumas that you kept suppressed
This stage can feel overwhelming. Seeing more doesn’t always feel empowering at first, it can feel heavy.
But awareness is a necessary step. You can’t gently change what you can’t yet see.
Relief often comes after understanding, not before it.
Healing Can Bring Grief
Grief is a part of healing that isn’t talked about enough but is a huge component in the healing journey.
You may grieve:
What you didn’t receive
The version of yourself who had to survive
Time lost, needs unmet, or paths not taken
and the grieve of the pain people caused you
This grief doesn’t mean you’re stuck in the past. It means you’re honoring your story with honesty and compassion. And that is a must. If we knew a friend was going through something like this, we would give them honesty and compassion (hopefully lol) so we have to learn to give it to ourselves as well.
Grief makes space for integration. It allows you to move forward without bypassing what mattered. Allow grief to happen however it may feel.
If Healing Feels Hard Right Now
If you’re in a season where healing feels heavy, slow, or uncomfortable, please know this:
You are not broken. You are not failing. You are not going backwards.
Your body and nervous system are learning safety, sometimes for the first time.
Healing doesn’t require rushing. It doesn’t require perfection. It asks for gentleness, patience, and support.
If healing feels harder right now, it often means something important is shifting.
And that is part of the beauty in healing. when we give ourselves these spaces to feel and heal, this will all be temporary and brings a future where the pain wont be running the show....You will be!
As I wrap up this blog.
You’re allowed to take this one step at a time. Your healing is valid, even when it’s messy, uncomfortable, and tough. Whole body healing takes time.
You are allowed to become safe within yourself.
Always be Truly You,
Christina
