So, what is it that I exactly do???

Lately I have been asked this a lot. And I get it; my coaching business is not something that is specifically spelled out. So let me take you on a walk as to why I got to my business and what it stands for.

With this we will have to take a step back into memory lane about over 20 years ago. It was college years for me and trying to figure out what I wanted to be when I grew up. The excitement of curiosity and exploration took me by storm and as a young 18-year-old woman it was a whirlwind. It was freedom from being now labeled an adult and getting to make my own choices.

I remember first wanting to get into art and graphic design. Designing and creating kids' movies was something that set me on fire, but college had other plans.

My college counselor told me that my future in art after my first two quarters wouldn’t work out because my art “wasn’t that good” and I should look for another career. Saying that to me after I had been recovering from a car accident and the passing of my grandmother, those words set me back deeply. Being told your art was horrible and no sight of a future, ouch! I took some time off that spring to fall semester to figure out what else lit me up… and that directed me towards studying psychology.

Man, did I love learning and absorbing psychology and sociology classes like I was a sponge. I was really good at it too. Even teachers later on in classes told me I really had a knack for understanding people and how to help find answers in helping them out. They thought I had found a really good career path for myself.

Toward the end of schooling, I got nervous and decided to stop my college classes with only just a few classes left. At the time, I had fallen in love with my “soulmate” and believed what he told me. He would say that “I didn’t need to continue my schooling because he would go further in his career than myself and support our family on his own. Also, that schooling wasn’t for me and I could do better with other interests instead.” I stopped my schooling and supported my then “Soulmate” in his career endeavors.

Once he was done with his schooling, I did go back to school, but for cosmetology. And honestly, even though it didn’t connect directly to psychology, it became a huge source of income when I eventually left that “soulmate” and needed to support my children for the following years until Covid came. You could call it my “survival job”.

And then Covid hit.

and honestly… opened my eyes.

I enjoyed making people feel beautiful and confident about themselves, but I felt like something was missing. Especially when I had to face one of my biggest battles I had ever had to fight… protecting my children from their abuser, my “soulmate”. Through that experience I realized that at the end of the day, my real drive was listening to others and supporting them through hard times. That’s when I knew cosmetology was no longer for me and started looking into what avenues of mental health felt good for me.

I realized just talking, listening, and helping others work through difficult moments is what made me feel complete.

During that battle, it showed me how little support people truly get during traumatic experiences and how little understanding there can be around helping someone through them.

I say that because that’s what I experienced. At a time where I needed a no judgment space to talk, vent, process and find resolution, very few people could sit in those spaces with me. I realized it’s hard for many people to hear about pain, trauma and hardships, but that shouldn’t be the case. Most people, like myself, already hate being in those moments to begin with, so when no one is willing to hold space for them, it makes them feel even more alone.

I started educating myself. One, to help myself and my family work through the hard stuff we were experiencing. And by building my knowledge and certifications from it, I wanted to share that knowledge with others. I wanted people to know they don’t have to be alone during hard times and we can find healthy non medical ways to help ourselves through tough times.

And through all of that, I realized I didn’t want to finish my psychology degree — not because I didn’t want to learn more, but because I didn’t want to learn through labeling and diagnosing that comes with that field. Yes, there is a time and place for those things, but my gut never felt good about putting a label or diagnosing a person.

I found other avenues to gain knowledge without the focus being diagnosis, but instead resolution, understanding, nervous system regulation, emotional safety and healing.

I started diving into trauma, nervous system regulation, communication, emotional safety, boundaries, healing, coping skills, EFT tapping, mindfulness, self-love, trauma responses and understanding how the body and mind work together during stress and survival.

And the more I learned, the more I realized something important…

Most people are not looking for someone to “fix” them. Most people are looking for someone to truly hear them. To help them feel safe enough to understand themselves again.

That’s where Truly You Life Coaching was born.

Not from perfection.

Not from someone who had life all figured out.

But from someone who walked through hard things, had to rebuild herself from the ground up, and wanted to create the kind of support she wished existed during some of her hardest moments.

What I do is help people reconnect with themselves. I help people understand their nervous system, their patterns, their triggers, their emotions and the parts of themselves they may have lost in survival mode.

I hold space for people without judgment. I help people slow down and take a deep breath. I help people find grounding, clarity, self-worth and safety within themselves again.

Some days that can look like deep conversations.

Some days it looks like nervous system tools.

Some days it looks like accountability, reflection, art, breathwork or simply reminding someone they are still worthy even in hard seasons.

My business was never meant to fit perfectly inside a box.

Because healing doesn’t fit perfectly inside one either.
